Ok I’ll confess, when I think about Chicago, I am immediately reminded of two diametrically opposite things-Vandalism and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Who would have thought that the city has a long and rich culture of Flowers. To start off with one must congratulate Mayor Richie Daley for his efforts at beautification of downtown Chicago, which as anyone taking a stroll downtown will tell you have borne fruit. With the air thick with the scent of a myriad flowers in different colors it’s a joy to walk along the tree lined streets, taking in the sights and the smells. A flower lover’s paradise.
Downtown Chicago is by no means the only link that Flowers and Chicago share. The city is renowned world over for its spectacular flower and garden shows which are held on a regular basis. These festivals hold many events showcasing unique gardening skills in addition to which there are workshops and lectures ranging on various topics like how best to extend the life of your perennial flowers, or new ways of floral arrangement. These flower festivals are always very well attended.
Moving on, there’s the Chicago Botanical garden which is the second most visited botanical garden in the world. Built over an area of 350 acres, it contains over 2.2 million plant species, and is home to some of the rarest flowers in the world. The Garden itself is divided into various smaller sections like the aquatic garden which displays water flowers like lotuses and water lilies, and the bulb garden, the English oak garden, heritage garden, Japanese garden and so on.
Chicago is also a major center for the American Flower industry. Millions of flowers are delivered each year in this city which just cant seem to get enough of flowers. There are many renowned family run flower shops in Chicago which are trusted and patronized by a lot of people. There’s growing mistrust about online florists and middlemen which can be justified by the exploitation many consumers had to suffer at their hands. Therefore many people prefer to do things the old-fashioned way and find a florist in their vicinity who is easy to track down instead of a nameless person behind a computer screen. One of the notable names in Chicago’s Floral designing circles is Casey Cooper, who designed flower arrangements for Oprah’s televised 50th birthday party.
