Flower pots are an excellent way of organizing your garden which sometimes can get a little out of hand. However, I personally find that flower pots tend to be more useful inside the house than outside. They are excellent to plant a couple of houseplants indoors when you want more greenery inside than the bunch of artificial flowers on the mantle. They are also very useful at the entrance of your house, you could plant some exotic plants which would give a very welcoming look to you home. However, people have resigned themselves to using
the ugly orange brown variety of pots which just look so out of place in a designed décor. There are loads of varieties available like ceramic flower pots, clay flower pots, terra cotta flower pots, painted flower pots and many more. So how do you choose? Here are a couple of things you may want to keep in mind while choosing those flower pots.
Choosing the right flower pot
The surrounding area-: Are you using them for your garden, backyard, veranda or indoor? Small pots would look extremely out of place in your garden, you could color co-ordinate the garden pots with the color of your house. Similarly you may want to keep the style of your house in mind, is it a cottage, oriental or a condo.
The plant requirements-: Some plants need a large flower pots to grow in because their roots spread far and wide. While some may need a lower but wider flower pot almost like a flowerbed for growing closely grouped plants.
The location-: If you are using them on a balcony, you may want to use hanging pots or small delicate ones in your bedroom. The location dictates to a large extent the kind of flower pots you can use.
Time for maintenance-: How much time can you really spare for maintaining your flower pots? Terracotta flower pots have a tendency to dry out very quickly, so if you feel that you will not be able to keep up with the daily maintenance chores, choose a plastic flower pot or a closed ceramic flower pot. To make life easier, you could also choose self-watering flower pots which are easily available these days.
If you want something decorative, there are a wide variety of metallic flower pots available these days which resemble the oriental majestic flower pots, however these are not very good for the plants as they do not respond well to metal.
