A home flower garden is like a sanctuary you escape to get away from the hustle bustle of the world. It works like a stress buster. However creating and maintaining a flower garden is no simple task, it requires time and devotion. If you are willing to spend that kind of time looking after your flowers, here’s a list of flowers which are a must-have in your home flower garden.
Carnations
They can be grown in every possible color from the whites to the reds and even purples. Also they have endless symbolism weaved around them right from purity and innocence to a mother’s love and even good luck. Carnations are traditionally worn at all examinations at the Oxford University, the white for the first examination, the red for the last and the pink for all those in between. The carnations require warmer climes to grow well but can be planted in a cooler climate as well as long as the soil is well drained. They grow to be as tall as 60 cm. Carnations are sure to add a breath of ‘fresh air’ to your garden.
Violet
Perhaps one of the most popular spring wildflower, these beautifully scented flowers can be grown in blue, yellow and white flowering species. They generally grow from March onwards continuing till the height of the summer in July. They grow to be only about 15-20 cms tall. The violet was considered a symbol of love and fertility by the ancient Greeks and they also used it in love potions. Legend has it that Zeus, the god of gods, turned his beloved Io into a white cow to save himself from his spiteful wife. He then created the sweet scented purple wildflower for her to graze on.
Mexican Sunflower
This annual is about the easiest to grow and perfect for a flower garden. A beautiful flower, it looks exactly like a common sunflower except that it ranges from a deep gold to a rich red color. However unlike the common sunflower, the Mexican sunflower requires partial shade, with a little extra water. It does not agree at all with full sun exposure. The leaves and petals are like very soft petal. The seeds would be likely to germinate at the end of spring and then the flowers only bloom in the summer.
