Spring is undoubtedly the best time of the year, the sun is out, snow is forgotten and everybody is in jubilant spirits. It is also the best time for your garden as well, thanks to all the bright varieties of spring flowers that add a whole lot of cheer to it. All of a sudden we find ourselves leaving the comforts of our homes and spending a whole lot of time in our gardens. And trust me, everyone, and I mean everyone has at one point or another compared their garden to Eden particularly in spring. So lets have a look at some of the most popular spring flowers which you must absolutely have in your garden.
Tulips
Thanks to the generic modification, Tulips are grown throughout the year by ‘growers’ to keep up with the growing demand. However Tulips continue to be Spring flowers. Tulips require a period (12 weeks) of cold when they are dormant or resting. Therefore you must have the bulbs planted before winter sets in. The ground ought to be moist when seeds are planted, thereafter give it 2-4weeks for the roots to set in before you start watering the plant. The beauty and quality of the Tulips that finally spring up in your garden depends largely upon the size of the bulbs, the larger the bulb the more larger and beautiful will the flowers be. Once the start sprouting keep the plant well watered as it grows well in moist soil once it’s had its freezing period rest.
Hyacinth
Hyacinths are the ultimate symbol of spring. These fragrant beautiful flowers are so eager to bloom that you really don’t need to put in much effort once they have had their freezing period. In the Victorian times, ‘forcing’ hyacinths to bloom in a container of water was quiet a rage, a trend that fell short eventually primarily because garden writers made the process appear more complicated than it was. Choose large bulbs for healthier flowers. Plant these bulbs 2-4 weeks before winter sets in as they require up to 16 weeks of freezing period before they start blooming. Add some flower fertilizer while planting. They grow best in full sunlight.
Daffodils
Daffodils are amongst the first signs of spring as they are one of the easiest flowers to grow. Purchase high quality bulbs that are free of bruises, and plant them in the fall so as to give them the customary freezing period. Thereafter you need not do much as daffodils pretty much manage on their own. You could water the plant once in a while after the roots have had time to set in. But do make sure that you plant the bulbs in a sunny spot.
Other popular spring flowers are hollies, lilies and wood anemones. Most of them follow the same procedure of planting with minor differences. If you forget to plant the bulbs before winter sets in, but would still like a garden full of spring flowers, you can even buy pre frozen bulbs which will start blooming 2-4 weeks after they have been planted. But these bulbs will not last as many seasons as naturally frozen ones do.
