I have always maintained that the beauty of wildflowers has gone largely unnoticed. They continue to bloom in all their splendor along highways, uninhabited mountainsides. Their allure lies in the fact that wildflowers are so unpredictable, the same plant can at times bloom with two different looking plants. The fact that they grow best when entirely left to themselves makes wildflowers a blessing for those who do not have too much time to spend looking after their gardens. You could simply scatter wildflower seeds and watch as they bloom into some of the beautiful flowers you have ever seen. Here are some of the wildflowers you may want to plant in your garden.
Violet
Perhaps one of the most popular spring wildflower, these beautifully scented flowers can be grown in blue, yellow and white flowering species. They generally grow from March onwards continuing till the height of the summer in July. They grow to be only about 15-20 cms tall. The violet was considered a symbol of love and fertility by the ancient Greeks and they also used it in love potions. Legend has it that Zeus, the god of gods, turned his beloved Io into a white cow to save himself from his spiteful wife. He then created the sweet scented purple wildflower for her to graze on.
Wild Sweet William
It is so called because it blooms at the same time as the commonly cultivated Sweet William from early April through mid May. It's a blessing for a gardener because it blooms wonderfully in the shade and produces a rather spectacular display of flowers without any fuss or bother at all to the gardener. It grows best in rich woodland soil with a high amount of organic matter and good drainage.
Showy Orchis
True that Showy Orchis's are one of the rarer wildflowers but if you can manage to grow it in your gardens, nothing like it. It's rarely over 5-6" in height. They flower well in cooler, moist rich hardwoods where the soil does not have too much acid in it and they also require filtered sunlight. They bloom by late April and early May.
Remember that though everybody likes to grow wildflowers in their gardens nobody would like their garden to look like a meadow. Wildflowers are known to grow profusely so you have to take care to regularly prune them to keep them from overgrowing. That aside wildflowers will surely add an exotic touch to your garden.
You may want to attend one of the various wild flower festivals to meet people who would assist you in bringing the wild to your backyard!
