Unlike what most people think, winter need not be the barren, bleak time for flowers. There are a large variety of flowers which bloom in winter to add that much needed color to your garden. Combining a variety of winter flowers will help you create a garden that is green all year round. Snowdrops
Snowdrops are the classic winter flowering plant. These 15 cm tall flower plants are almost devoid of leaves but have a small pendulum, bell shaped, pure white flower above each stalk. These flowers are full and hardy complete with especially hardened tips to push through the snow. They like moist soil with plenty of humus. Plant them in partial shade, as they cannot stand hot dry locations. They bloom from January through March.
Christmas rose
The Christmas rose is one of the easiest and most rewarding winter flowers to grow. They bloom from late fall up until early spring. They have dark green shiny leathery leaves with white blooms, the flowers may sometimes also be tinged in pink. They should be planted in partial shade or under a deciduous tree. The soil should be wet and well fertilized. Legend has it that a young shepherdess was crying as she has no gifts to bring to the newborn Jesus, not even a flower. An angel upon hearing this brushed aside the snow to reveal a most beautiful white flower tinged with pink-the Christmas rose. However despite all the holy connection, be careful when planting this flower as the roots are very poisonous.
Mountain ash
Also known as Rowan, these are excellent small trees for ornamental purposes in your garden. They do not grow to be too tall only about 10 m, and some of them just remain as shrubs. They are native throughout the cool temperature regions throughout the northern hemisphere. The small red berries, which grow in clusters, look very colorful and serve to attract birds as they make good food for birds.
Honeysuckle
Honeysuckle vines are easy to grow, vigorous, heat tolerant and nearly indestructible. The flowers are flashy and fragrant and produce sweet edible nectar. Its best to allow it to grow along a trellis or an arbor. The flowers will bloom right from spring through winter. They need very little watering. They even look good indoors in a winter flower arrangement.
Winter jasmine
These flowers are native to China and as the name suggests Winter Jasmine flowers from November to March. The flowers are bright yellow with six petals. It should be grown in partial shade and can also be grown as a Bonsai! They are also a popular winter wedding flower.
